TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — When a popular Mexican fast food restaurant got rid of its free burrito running challenge, two Valley ultrarunners took matters into their own hands to create their own version.

The popular challenge, created by Chipotle and the running app Strava, motivated thousands of runners to log miles during the month of January for a shot at free burritos for a year.

However, there was no announcement for the 2026 promotion, leading many to believe the challenge was over. Two Valley runners, Jamil Coury and Kevin Russ, decided to create their own challenge — dubbed the Burrito League.

From Jan. 6 to Jan. 31, runners from cities across the nation, including Tempe, must complete a designated short Strava “segment,” typically a few hundred meters long. Runners must log as many attempts on the approved segment as possible. Speed is not needed for this challenge — it’s all about endurance.

The rules are simple — whoever runs or walks the most “segments” wins the grand prize of a year’s worth of free burritos and other goodies!

Runs must be uploaded publicly to Strava on the approved Strava segment. In addition, runs must be made public on the day they are recorded. No hiding runs until the end, or you will be disqualified.

Interested in joining? Join the Burrito League Strava club. The “Local Legend” leaderboard of the Burrito League will determine the winner.
