Arizona joined 25 other states in suing the Trump administration over FEMA and DHS funding conditions tied to elections and immigration. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said the administration cannot use disaster and public-safety funding to pressure states into changing election laws or shifting local law-enforcement resources. The lawsuit challenges FEMA and Department of Homeland Security policies that plaintiffs say could put billions in grants at risk. Among the disputed requirements are paper ballots, manual audits and citizenship verification in voter databases. FEMA called the case “partisan pushback,” arguing the policies are meant to strengthen election security. The states contend the conditions violate the Constitution and federal administrative law.
Former NFL kicker and broadcaster Jay Feely, the Republican nominee, has President Donald Trump’s endorsement and says his campaign will focus on the economy. Democrat Amish Shah, an emergency room doctor and former state lawmaker, won his primary despite outside spending against him. Shah is centering his campaign on the economy and health care, including Medicaid access. The district includes Scottsdale, Fountain Hills and parts of north Phoenix. The race could help determine which party controls the U.S. House.

More than 24 hours after the polls closed in Tuesday's Arizona primary, Amish Shah and Kimberly Yee were declared the winners in their respective races. Shah won the Democratic primary Wednesday for Congressional District 1 and will face Republican Jay Feel in the fall. Yee beat incumbent Tom Horne for the Republican nomination for Superintendent of Public Instruction and faces Democrat Teresa Leyba Ruiz in the fall.
