Mexican Baseball Fiesta celebrates 15 years with first-ever ASU, GCU matchups
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Experience the ultimate béisbol fiesta this weekend in Maryvale as Arizona colleges go head-to-head with Mexican Pacific League teams!
The Mexican Baseball Fiesta is celebrating its 15th year this weekend at American Family Fields with games, food and music in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Luis Gamez, operations chief of the Mexican Baseball Fiesta, says the event started in Tucson before moving to Maryvale 14 years ago. For the first time, Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University will take the field against Mexican Pacific League teams.
Gamez says his father started the event 15 years ago, and it remains a family tradition.
“We come from a baseball background, so we’re big baseball fans,” Gamez said. “We’ve come to spring training games here, and to have the league be able to come here and do this, it’s truly special.”
The party doesn’t end once the game does! Fans can stay for concerts following each game.
College vs. Mexican League styles
Gamez described the two levels of baseball as distinct styles.
“It’s just two styles of baseball that are very unique,” Gamez explained. “The Mexican League is more of a finesse game and more of an old-school type of baseball, where college baseball is more heavy fastballs, aggressive, young guys that are playing hard.”
He said he is interested in seeing how GCU and ASU match up against the Mexican Pacific League teams.
