WASHINGTON (AZFamily) — The Justice Department has launched a campaign finance investigation into Sen. Ruben Gallego, multiple reports said Tuesday.

The probe is over a whistleblower complaint that claims Gallego has used political committee cash since 2019 for family trips to Miami, Chicago, Disneyland and Disney World.

Federal records show that he had a joint fundraising account with disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell of California and spent more than $37,000 on tickets and meals for Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.

The reported investigation comes after a bipartisan Senate ethics probe found Gallego did not violate any Senate rules or laws.

CBS News reported the Justice Department has not called Gallego about a potential or ongoing investigation. However, the focus of Justice Department investigations is usually not contacted in the early stages.

Gallego has denied any wrongdoing when it comes to campaign finance laws. A Gallego spokesperson said the investigation was politically motivated.

Gallego, who’s serving his first term in the Senate and is mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, has faced recent scrutiny over his past ties to Swalwell. Gallego considered Swalwell a close friend and chaired the California Democrat’s 2020 presidential campaign.

Swalwell resigned from Congress in April after sexual assault allegations. Shortly after, Gallego held an emotional press conference, denying any wrongdoing but conceding that he “messed up” in trusting Swalwell.
