Arizona Humane Society reports rise in animal hoarding cases across the Valley
Humane Society reports 47 cases since start of year, nearly 700 pets rescued
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Animal hoarding is becoming more common in Arizona, according to new numbers from the Humane Society.
Many of the cases are happening in the Valley, where hundreds of pets have been saved. Many of them are on their way to healthy and happy new homes.
The Arizona Humane Society investigates hoarding cases when they catch the attention of authorities. Kelsey Dickerson, a spokesperson for the nonprofit, said what they are seeing this year is alarming.
“We have definitely seen an uptick in hoarding,” Dickerson said. “This is a huge problem happening here in the valley.”
Since the start of the year, the organization has responded to 47 hoarding cases. That has resulted in them rescuing nearly 700 pets. They are currently investigating 11 cases which could bring in another 300 pets.
“It can really put a huge strain on our capacity,” Dickerson said.
Wayne Pacelle with the animal rights group Animal Wellness Action said they are seeing this trend happening across the country.
“I’m not surprised that there are this many cases,” Pacelle said.
In most cases, the hoarders do not take proper care of their pets.
“Hoarding cases, this is a mental disorder. They lose track of the condition of the animals. They typically don’t feed them enough. So the animals may be starving or severely emaciated. They’re often denied the basics like water. I mean, animals need water to survive,” Pacelle said.
The Humane Society said they rely on people calling it in. If you see animals kept in horrible living conditions, be sure to report it. A smell can be a big giveaway.
