Man struck, killed while attempting to cross freeway near Tempe

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man has died after being hit by a vehicle on Interstate 10 near Tempe overnight, leading to the freeway being closed early Friday morning.

Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers responded to the pedestrian-involved crash just before 1 a.m. on I-10 near Ray and Warner roads.

A DPS spokesperson says the man was attempted to cross the freeway when he was struck by a vehicle. He has not been publicly identified.

Westbound I-10 was closed in the area, with all traffic diverted to exit at Warner Road, then reenter the freeway. It reopened just before 5 a.m.

It’s still unclear why the person was walking on the freeway.

Also happening overnight, five people were killed in two separate crashes on I-10 in Buckeye. One involved a rollover that ended with three dead, and the other involved two semi-trucks and killed one person.
