PRESCOTT, AZ (AZFamily) — A Prescott woman was tricked into giving a scammer tens of thousands of dollars, in a scheme where the conman reportedly drove to her house to pick up the cash.

On Friday, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office was called to reports of a woman who had been tricked into giving a scammer $50,000.

The scammer reportedly told the woman that her Apple account had been fraudulently charged and that she could be arrested if she didn’t pay. The woman was called and told to withdraw $50,000 from her bank account and lie to the bank so she could get the money.

The suspect then pressured the woman to give her home address so the scammer could pick up the cash. The suspect then drove to the woman’s house in a Toyota sedan, told her to put the cash in an envelope and put the money in the trunk.

YCSO says the victim didn’t realize she was scammed until hours later. She then called the sheriff’s office and described the vehicle. Deputies searched the area but could not find the car.

According to YCSO, fraud cases increased in 2025, and millions of dollars were stolen from victims. They say the money is mostly transferred through cryptocurrency. However, scammers are becoming more brazen by showing up at victims’ homes and demanding cash.

YCSO advises that government entities will never come to your home or use cryptocurrency as a form of payment. If you have received a scam call, YCSO says to hang up and call them at 928-711-3260.
