2 students arrested for making fake school threats in Buckeye
BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — Two teens were arrested on Thursday after police said they made threats of school shootings in Buckeye that weren’t credible.
A 17-year-old boy at Buckeye Union High School and a 13-year-old girl at Bales Elementary School were taken into custody.
The Buckeye Police Department said it received more than 300 reports from people about threats of shootings at schools in the city during the past week.
The Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center received information about a threat of a school shooting and those details led them to the teen girl, police said.
Buckeye Union High School was placed on hold after a social media post said there was a gun in the bathroom on campus.
Police showed up on the campus and found the student who made the post. He said it was a text message he received from the 17-year-old.
The claim was fake and the teen was arrested, investigators said.
Both students face criminal charges and school discipline, police said.
“Buckeye police take every threat seriously and investigate them with the safety of our community in mind,” Buckeye Police Sgt. Zachary Astrup. “We want to remind everyone to report posts on social media that involve violence, or threats of violence instead of reposting them.”
