Court documents provide details of deadly road rage shooting in Surprise

SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — The suspect in a deadly road rage incident in Surprise allegedly laughed after shooting a man in front of his wife and kids, according to a witness statement in newly released court documents.

Jaidev Christian Spicely, 18, is accused of shooting and killing 33-year-old Nicholas Solano-Aguilar following an altercation on a Surprise roadway over the weekend.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Surprise police and fire crews responded to reports of a shooting in the area of 163rd and Grand avenues. Solano-Aguilar was found lying on the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and died a short time later at the hospital.

Court documents say police reviewed traffic camera footage that showed a gray Honda Accord driven by Spicely and a white Honda CRV driven by Solano-Aguilar approaching 163rd Avenue and Pat Tillman Boulevard. The same sedan and SUV are soon after seen stopping at the intersection of 163rd Avenue and Grand.

It’s unclear what happened before they came to a stop, but traffic cameras reportedly showed Solano-Aguilar get out of his vehicle and walk to the driver’s side of Spicely’s car, where he was then shot multiple times and seen falling to the ground.

Documents say Solano-Aguilar didn’t appear to have anything in his hands when he was shot.

Solano-Aguilar’s wife, who was also in the SUV with their two children, then reportedly got out and took a photo of the Accord’s license plate as the suspect sped away.

The suspect nearly collided with several other vehicles, documents say, and one witness told police Spicely was honking his horn and laughing as he fled northbound on Grand.

Around 2:10 p.m., approximately 40 minutes after the shooting, documents say Spicely called 911 and allegedly admitted to shooting someone. He provided his Surprise address and reportedly said police could come to pick him up.

After Spicely was arrested, officers later served a search warrant at the home and found a loaded handgun in his bedroom. Documents described the gun as a 9mm Glock 19 with a loaded high-capacity magazine.

Investigators say two spent shell casings recovered at the shooting scene matched ammunition in the gun found at Spicely’s home.

Detectives also located a gray Honda Accord parked in the garage, which had dried red stains on the exterior of the driver’s side door.

Spicely requested an attorney and was then booked into the Maricopa County jail on charges including second-degree murder, discharging a firearm in city limits and disorderly conduct with a weapon.

The incident remains under investigation.
