Mother of 5 children killed in crash on rented scooter after hitting buckled sidewalk
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - A Utah family is mourning the loss of a young single mother who was killed in a crash on a rented motorized scooter.
Early Friday morning, Ashley Peck received severe head injuries after being thrown from the scooter when she hit a portion of a sidewalk that buckled.
She died hours later.
Her family believes she had no warning of trouble on the sidewalk ahead.
There was a streetside vigil for Peck set up in the cold and rain over the weekend.
Peck was 33.
“Every time she walked into a room, she was the bright sunshine,” Emilio Gonzalez, Peck’s cousin, said.
Loved ones said she was riding the rented scooter home after spending time with a cousin and her boyfriend in downtown Salt Lake City.
“She was the one that got everybody together,” Peck’s sister, Tina Marie, remembered. “Anytime the family came together was because of Ashley.”
Peck crashed on a sidewalk on South West Temple Street.
Barricades, tape and cones mark the site now.
Peck’s sister says there was nothing on Friday to signal danger in the early morning darkness.
“There was nothing showing that there was anything wrong with that sidewalk,” Marie claimed. “She has five boys. She’s a single mom. The youngest is going to be 4 months old on the first of April. They all lost their mom because of this and it’s not right.”
A spokesperson for the Salt Lake City mayor’s office said the city is reviewing the circumstances related to the accident.
