PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Baseball fans rejoice! Spring training starts in about a week!

Get ready for the crack of the bats, the sound fastballs of hitting the glove and an ice-cold beer. While the rest of the country is dealing with winter, our time to shine is now with amazing Phoenix weather.

Spring Training

March is a great time to check out a ball game.

But maybe you’re new to the Valley and are not quite sure what to expect at the games. In general, our March weather is pretty amazing, but sometimes the warmth can sneak up on us. The first spring training game starts Friday, Feb. 21, and the average high for the day in Phoenix is 72 degrees.

February and March do bring occasional showers to the Valley. In fact, March is our third wettest month, with Phoenix picking up just under an inch for the month. It’s not uncommon to see rain on the field during the stretch of games.

But for the most part, you can plan an average of 84% of the month with potential sunshine, according to the Arizona State Climate Office.

Aside from the rain chance, there’s also a noticeable warm up in March. We start the month in the low 70s but end with our normal high climbing around 10 degrees to 81.

But what about the dreaded 100-degree mark in March? While not common, it is possible! In 1998 Phoenix recorded a high of 100 degrees in late March. Yikes! Whatever the case, March is a decent month for us and a great one to enjoy some spring ball!

An Arizona native, born and raised in Mesa, and graduate of Arizona State University, meteorologist Ian Schwartz brings you the forecast weekday mornings on CBS 5 This Morning.
