GILA BEND, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Many homes are abandoned in Gila Bend after the devastating flood in August. Those who are trying to rebuild are hoping the rain holds off this weekend. "I hate water now. I don't want to see no more water. We used to--Gila Bend wanted rain because it was so hot and dry and now it's like, 'oh my God, it's raining,'" said David Mascarenas. "Everybody used to like to watch the wash run. Now they see it raining and they want to go run the other way, nobody wants to see it run."

Gila Bend home damage

Dozens are displaced due to the flood damage from last month.

Mascarenas' home is now empty and gutted out after the floodwaters and mud rushed severely damaged it. "I jumped out the back window and it was like 5 feet of water. Inside the house was like 3 feet," Mascarenas said. "I took everything out of my house, furniture--everything--carpet. Everything that was in there, it's gone. I mean, I got an empty house."

He says about 38 people have been displaced because of the flood damage. "It's like a ghost town right here. Nobody's here," Mascarenas said. "Everything's ruined. Everybody's cars are ruined. Like I said, everybody's in a motel."

Gov. Ducey issues emergency declaration in Coconino County; more funds for Gila Bend

Down the road from Mascarenas is another man who is trying to rebuild with the help of neighbors like Sergio Artea. "It's a big loss, you know, whoever bought property here and have their houses in here," said Artea. "We took the sheetrock out and we took all the linoleum tile out too."

Artea also hopes the rains hold off for a while while people make repairs to their homes. "It's a process, you know. It takes a lot of time," Artea said.

It rained in the morning on Friday and the wash is now running again, but Artea said he's still a bit uneasy. "It kind of upsets me because it's still the same height. You would think the town would want to put at least 2 or 3 more feet up, give us a little more confidence or whatever," he said.
