Woman in extremely critical condition, 5 others injured in a crash in Phoenix

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- One person has died and several others are injured after a crash Sunday evening near 44th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus says the crash happened around 10:45 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found a two-vehicle crash. Officers learned that a Kia Soul was driving south on 45th Avenue and was making a left turn onto Indian School Road when it crashed with a Hyundai Sonata that was driving west on Indian School Road.

Justus says both adults in the Kia were taken to the hospital. One of those adults who was later identified as 63-year-old Cheryl Anderson, died from her injuries at the hospital. Three of six people inside the Hyundai ran from the crash, according to Justus. One of the three that fled the scene was later found, taken to the hospital, and left before getting treatment. The other three people inside the Hyundai were taken to the hospital.

Justus says the driver of the Kia did not have any signs of impairment but officers believe that impairment was a factor on behalf of the driver of the Hyundai.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
