Off-duty officer stops wrong-way driver in Chandler

CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- An off-duty Phoenix police officer was able to stop a wrong-way driver on the Loop 202 in Chandler early Wednesday morning.

According to Sgt. Maggie Cox with Phoenix police, the off-duty officer was on his way from working the late shift when he saw a white Toyota pick-up driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Loop 202 east of Kyrene at about 4:30 a.m. The officer called to report the driver and was able to get her to stop.

The driver, an 87-year-old woman from Lakeside, AZ stated she was confused when she entered the highway. Cox said impairment was not a factor and no crashes or injuries were reported.

"The actions the officer took, is just one example of how our employees are committed to the safety of not just our community members but anyone who needs help," Cox said in a press release.

The responding trooper with the Arizona Department of Public Safety requested that her driver's license be re-examined. The woman was cited for wrong-way driving and was released to a relative.
