PHOENIX, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A wrong-way driver caused a serious crash on Interstate 17 late Sunday night near Black Canyon City.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said the wrong-way crash happened around 10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-17 near the Bumble Bee Road exit, milepost 248.
DPS officials say a pickup truck was driving southbound in the northbound lanes for about two miles before it collided with another vehicle near Bumble Bee Road.
The high-speed impact caused severe damage to both vehicles involved. Two people were rescued from one of the vehicles. One person was trapped in the second vehicle and also had to be rescued.
Fire officials say multiple people were taken to hospitals with very serious injuries. DPS added impairment is believed to be involved.
Interstate 17 was closed for several hours while DPS investigated. It reopened around 1:30 a.m. The southbound lanes were unaffected.
