PHOENIX, AZ (3TV/CBS5) – Phoenix police say the suspects in a deadly crash in west Phoenix Friday morning stole a pickup truck from a passerby trying to help and ran off from the scene.
The wreck happened just after midnight in the intersection of 71st Avenue and Thomas Road. Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller says crews found two cars involved when they arrived to the scene. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Williams, the suspects in the car stole a passerby's Chevy Avalanche after the passerby and passenger were trying to get help for those injured in the crash. Police say the suspects got their weapons and ammo from the truck before taking off in that vehicle. Police later caught up to them at a home near 75th Avenue and Palm Lane. Officers arrested the driver there, who was the passenger in the truck at the time of the crash.
Video from our Arizona Family's drone showed the passenger car and truck with extensive damage resting on the light pole. The intersection was closed while Phoenix police conducted the investigation. The area reopened shortly after 11 a.m.
The suspects' names were not immediately released.
