Diamondbacks Tyler Gilbert

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Tyler Gilbert has been named the National League Player of the Week after throwing a no-hitter in his first career start. The achievement has not been done since 1953, when Bob Holloman also accomplished the same feat with the St. Louis Browns.

MLB Network announced the award Monday, Aug. 16. Gilbert is the second Diamondbacks player to win the honor this season. He joins fellow teammate and pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who was also named player of the week on April 26, after throwing a seven-inning unofficial no-hitter.

Gilbert threw the third no-hitter in Diamondbacks franchise history on Saturday, joining Edwin Jackson and Randy Johnson. Gilbert's historic night added to Arizona sports history, with the no-hitter being the first one at Chase Field.

The team and crowd erupted into cheers when Padres outfielder Tommy Pham lined out to Ketel Marte, ending the game. Gilbert's achievement will be etched in history, with his hat and ball being sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
