Josh Lenz from Arizona State University was crowned the 2021 champion with his winning design, “Sun Devils Salute to Service.” Lenz’s design featured the iconic maroon and gold “ASU” in both endzones. Lenz added a salute to military personnel with a maroon and gold “USA” in the endzones and two Pat Tillman 42 logos. He also opted for a black pitchfork on the 50-yard line.

Lenz is the Assistant Manager of Athletic Grounds at Arizona State and has also served as an NFL grounds crew member. He graduated from Iowa State with a Master of Science in Horticulture and joined ASU in 2018. His winning submission won by 114 votes on the STMA’s Facebook page.

“This is a tremendous event that I’ve had my eye on for years,” says Lenz. “To finally be part of it was a great honor, and the credit goes to our entire team, especially Brian Johnson, who had a huge role in bringing our patriotic concept to life.”

Lenz will attend the 2022 STMA Annual Conference in Georgia, and his winning design will be featured throughout the conference.
