PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- They say a picture is worth a thousand words. From magazines to websites, pictures certainly grab our attention.
Some of the world’s most popular magazines that you may have in your home, like Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple, Parenting and Family Circle are all connected to Arizona's Family.
Meredith Corporation not only owns 3TV and CBS 5, but dozens of magazines and popular websites like All Recipes. Most of the beautiful covers and photos you see are taken at a studio inside Meredith's corporate offices in Des Moines, Iowa.
We had the chance to recently visit the studio, where literally any setting can be created. The huge warehouse of a building has no windows to the outside.
The massive space is designed to be flexible enough to create the illusion of any sort of room you could possibly imagine. Reese Strickland is the Director of Photography and he says the studio is just one piece of the puzzle.
“Everybody from our photo assistant to our photographers, the creative directors, the people on the magazine side of things that bring us our work, I really think we are kind of part of one big magic puzzle," explained Strickland.
There is a "Hall of Walls," where production crews can pick out the texture, paint, door or window of a wall for a setting. Need something special for your room, like a fireplace or a custom cabinet? A fully operational wood shop is ready to build anything. If there is a bed in the photograph, giant blocks of styro-foam double as a mattress. It looks like the real thing, but the fake bed is now lighter and easier to move around.
There is also a half kitchen, half photography studio where some of the most challenging photography takes place. Professional food stylists hover over every detail, every glisten, every bubble to make sure the subject of the photo is ready for its close up.
These photographs will go on the covers of a magazine or maybe accompany recipes inside. They could also show up on digital or social platforms. It is an endless cycle of set, stand back, shoot, shift and shoot it all over again.
"It’s my ultimate fantastic dream job," said Stephanie Hunter, with Meredith Corporation's production team. "Who doesn’t want to be a part of an amazing team of creative people every day working with passionate creative people is the best thing you could possibly ask for."
