Glendale Offers Free Small Tree Care Class on November 7th

It's finally fall planting season, so grab a shovel and start digging! The cooler weather makes it an ideal time of the year to get trees established before the summer heat sets in again. Trees provide so many benefits, such as enhancing our environment, adding to our property values, and improving our well-being. The Glendale Water Services Department is offering a free "Small Trees for Small Yards" class on Wednesday, November 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown St.

Tips on how to select, plant, and care for desert trees will be included so everyone can plant for success! Trees no matter their size, are a long-term investment and understanding how to properly care for our "leafy friends" can save you time and money.

Question 1. What are some small trees that you recommend homeowners plant in their yards?

Choose low-water-use trees, like Mulga and Palo Blanco, since they have special adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive in the desert. Small trees are 10 x 15, and medium are around 15 x 25 when fully mature. The Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert guide lists nearly 40 trees that do well in our climate. (Victoria to show Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert guide).

Question 2. What should homeowners consider when selecting a tree?

Right tree in the right place. Make sure that you know how big your tree will be at maturity so that it can fit in the space that you have selected for it. If you have a small yard, you want to select a tree that will fit like the Desert Willow. Always check the roots of the tree in the pot before bringing it home. Roots that circle around the trunk (girdle) will kill the tree as it gets older (Victoria to show potted trees).

Question 3. What are the steps involved in properly planting a tree?

You want to dig a hole that is at least two times as wide and slightly shallower than the tree was in its container. One of the main reasons trees die early is that they were planted too deep in the ground, which cuts off oxygen to the roots.

Question 4. What are some tree watering tips?

You want to water your trees to the depth of two to three feet. A soil probe is an easy tool to use to see how deep you're watering the tree. About an hour after watering, push the probe into the soil. It will move easily through wet soil, but it will be difficult to push through dry soil. (Joanne to show the soil probe). As the tree matures, you want to water the tree at its' drip line (Joanne to show Landscape Watering by the Numbers guide).

The next class will be held on January 16 at 6 p.m. and will cover identifying and controlling insects in your garden. For a complete listing of Glendale's "Green-Living" class series, go to Classes are free, but advance registration is required by calling 623-930-3760 or emailing You do not have to be a Glendale resident to attend.

Motivational Monday: How To NOT Gain Weight during the Holidays

Common reasons why people gain weight during the holidays "it’s too cold, why bother now, thanks, giving is next week, I'll just wait until Jan 1st.

Every meal counts, if you have 1 "bad meal" you can still have 2 good ones. Don't drink your calories.

Half-workout is better than a no workout. With HIITMAX you burn fat, not time. 15 mins a day

Exercises to tighten & tone the body, burn more calories, & build a butt while doing it.

3 Nutrition Hacks... to avoid gaining weight around the holidays?

A diet that works even around the busiest holiday schedule.

1. Implement Intermittent Fasting

2. Cycle Your Carbs (Holiday Feasting)

3. Insert a Superfoods Shake (could replace one of your meals)

Burn More Calories In Less Time (3 Tips to Stay In Shape Around The Holidays)

A 15min training routine that burns fat while simultaneously toning your butt.

1. Recruit more muscle fibers and burn more fat.

2. Use a glute activator band and simultaneously work your glutes, your abs, and torch insane amounts of calories (demonstrate two exercises)

3. Keep heart rate up for 15min (220 - your age 60-70% optimal zone) I like to make it even more simple I call it the no talk zone (meaning if you can carry on a conversation while you're training your intensity isn't high enough)

Follow a simple program and do it overcommit, the holidays are challenging enough.

Goal is to move, but to do more in less time by using the right exercises along with our Glute Activator Band.
