PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- The “Now Boarding” wheel landed on Australia, which is difficult for a couple of reasons. First, Australia has no plans of reopening its borders anytime soon. Second, bookings for 2022 are up into the $2,500+ range for flights plus hotels.

One option to cut the price of a future Australian vacation down by $1,000 is to sign up for a credit card and use the miles for one of the lengthy flights. Right now, Hawaiian Airlines is offering 70,000 miles (after spending $2,000 in three months) which should be enough to cover a one-way flight. Alaska Airlines is offering 40,000 bonus miles, which will get you a one-way ticket for February.

If you do make plans for a future trip, check out some of these places: Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, the Sydney Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, and the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns. Halfway through the trip, I’d recommend taking a cheap flight ($100 or less) from Sydney to Cairns to spend a few days on the reef.

Air New Zealand is offering the best prices from Phoenix to Sydney at the moment, but that changes weekly. Their Australian website provides one-way flights for 1010 Australian Dollars, which is about $780 US Dollars.

Rental in Bondi Beach neighborhood of Sydney: $374 for three nights.

Rental in Cairns: $278 for three nights.
