Michael Waters, MD, PhDMichael Waters, MD, PhD
Michael Waters, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurologist and the director of the Neurovascular Division and Stroke Program at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Dr. Waters earned his master’s degree in genetics from Penn State and his doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he also received his medical doctorate. He completed his residency training at the UCLA Department of Neurology and a fellowship in clinical and molecular neuro-genetics at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Waters’ research interests include genetic mechanisms of stroke, neuroprotection in stroke, and neurogenetic mechanisms of neuroplasticity. In 2006, he received the Founders Award for Excellence in Translational Research from the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Waters is a fellow of both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Heart Association. He is also a member of the American Neurological Association, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology.
