Police have located a 17-year-old driver suspected of hitting and killing a 73-year-old bicyclist in Gilbert Tuesday morning.

Police said a gold sedan was southbound on Higley Road midway between Ocotillo and Chandler Heights roads when it struck Calvin Ray Sapp, who was riding in the bike lane, around 5:30 a.m. The vehicle fled the area.

Police said Sapp may have been thrown 60 yards. He died on scene.

A Phoenix police officer who lives in the area noticed a car that looked like it had just been in a wreck parked in front of a house, according to Sgt. Jesse Sanger with the Gilbert Police Department.

Gilbert officers went to the home and located the suspect vehicle. Sanger said a 17-year-old at the home told the officers that he fell asleep and didn't know he had hit someone.

Officers at the house said the teen has since been arrested. He turns 18 in July.

Southbound Higley Road is closed in the area while police investigate.
