PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Two people including a child are dead following a chain-reaction crash on a freeway in central Phoenix on Monday night.
The crash involving four vehicles happened just before 6 p.m. on the southbound side of the State Route 51 near Highland Avenue.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a gray 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by Edgar Ramos-Esteban, 34, crashed into the rear of a blue 2005 Kia Sedan.
This collision caused a chain-reaction, which first sent the Kia sedan into the back of a blue 2015 Volkswagen sedan, driven by a 48-year-old Phoenix man.
The Volkswagen sedan then collided into a white 2018 Isuzu Truck driven by a 49-year-old man.
DPS said that the driver and passenger of the 2005 Kia sedan were killed.
Troopers identified the victims killed as 31-year-old Jennifer Vegtel and a 5-year-old boy. AZ Family talked with family members who identified the 5-year-old as Logan Vegtel.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Volkswagen was transported to a local hospital. His injuries are unknown at this time.
DPS said that Ramos was cited on the scene.
