An El Mirage woman says the 20-year-old young man she was helping get back on his feet called her the moments after he was hit by a car.
Cody Nielsen died. Now, Autumn Nunley is trying to help organize a funeral.
Nunley said it happened around 5 in the morning Tuesday at Olive Avenue and El Mirage Road while Nielsen was on his bicycle on the way to work.
She said she met Nielsen when her daughter started dating him in high school. He needed a stable place to stay, so she took him in. Nunley also said Nielsen's mother died when he was 9 and spent time with family members and family friends before moving in.
"Cody was a very positive person. He was a godly man, he was very much into faith," Nunley said. "He prayed a lot. He always wanted to help others learn more about God. He loved his two dogs."
Nunley said Nielsen was working extremely hard to afford a place to stay on his own.
"He started a new job three weeks ago was doing awesome working 12 hours, working overtime on weekends and trying to do whatever he can to be more successful," Nunley said.
She started a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
We have reached out to El Mirage Police for more information, but are waiting to hear back.
