PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Police say one child is dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting in south Phoenix Monday morning. It happened at a home near Seventh Street and Broadway Road.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus says two kids, a 2-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital after being shot. "We believe the children are siblings," she said. The 2-year-old girl, later identified by police as Esperanza Isidro, died at the hospital. Her brother on Tuesday morning remains in critical condition.

A 2-year-old girl is dead and her brother remains in the hospital after a shooting in South Phoenix. Police have detained the children's mother regarding the case.

Police say the 24-year-old mother of the two kids was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and was later arrested by police. The father of the kids is cooperating with police. "That's the question everybody wants to know, right? Why? Why would you hurt your kids? Why would you hurt anyone, but especially children?" Justus said.

Detectives are working to gather more information and the investigation is ongoing. Police said officers had been called to the home for a previous request for service. On Sept. 14, officers responded for a check welfare call to the home after the father was concerned for the well-being of his wife and children. Officers went to the home, but nobody was there. Police contacted the mother by phone, who told officers that she and the children were okay. Police say after that, officers had not received another call from that home until Monday.
