Diane Tirado

Diane Tirado said she was fired after refusing to follow the "No Zero" policy at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla (WPTV) -- Should students get half credit for an assignment they didn’t even turn in? A former St. Lucie County teacher doesn’t think so.

That’s why she wrote a goodbye message to her eighth graders on a white board saying: "Bye Kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. ?? Mrs. Tirado"

Diane Tirado has been a teacher for years, but she started at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie in August as an eighth grade U.S. history teacher.

"Teaching is a calling for me," she said.

She assigned an explorer notebook project, which she said she gave students two weeks to complete.

When several students didn’t turn it in, Tirado found out about what she calls a "no zero" policy, which is reflected in the West Gate student and parent handbook. Below the grading rubric, in red lettering, the handbook states "NO ZEROS- LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%"

“What if they don’t turn anything in?" Tirado said she asked administrators. "'We give them a 50.' I go, 'Oh, we don’t.' This is not kosher.'”

Tirado was terminated on Sept.14, but there’s no specific cause mentioned in the letter from the principal because she she was still in her probationary period, according to the letter.

On her last day after she was informed, she had to pack up her classroom, Tirado wrote the message to her students on her whiteboard before she left and sent out a picture of it through a class app. Several students responded in support.

"You were right about not giving people 50s because why would you give them half credit for doing nothing?" wrote one student.

Then, Tirado posted the shot of the whiteboard on Facebook. Now, it's been shared more than 400 times.

“I’m so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it’s not real," Tirado said.

The principal of West Gate deferred comment to the public information officer with the school district.

Kerry Padrick, chief information officer, sent the following statement:

"Diane Tirado was employed as a teacher for St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) from July 30, 2018 to September 14, 2018. She was contracted as a teacher on probationary status, and was terminated shortly after one month of classroom instruction.

SLPS values the importance of maintaining a high-quality teaching staff who support students’ individualized learning needs; who understand the value of forming appropriate and positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents; and who provide accurate and productive feedback to students on assignments. Wavering on the expectations of quality is not an option.

There is no District or individual school policy prohibiting teachers from recording a grade of zero for work not turned in. The District’s Uniform Grading System utilizes letter grades A-F, numerical grades 100-0 and grade point averages from 4-0."

When asked specifically about the wording of "no zeros" on the West Gate student and parent handbook, Padrick said:

"Some classroom teachers and school faculties have discussed the range of points for work submitted in each grading category.

This scale outlines a 10-point range for each letter grade: A = 90 to 100 B = 80 to 89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 50=59

A zero is noted on the scale for work not attempted or work that is incomplete."

Tirado said she was instructed never to give a student a zero, as the handbook states, and she hopes she can motivate policy change.

“A grade in Mrs. Tirado’s class is earned," Tirado said.

I agree with LSUTGR1. Leftist social engineering is running rampant in our public schools. My 50th class reunion at Coronado High in Scottsdale is coming up soon. It was back then that the first young liberal teachers started arriving. The English teacher I had in my junior year would pass everyone, whether they showed up for class or not. Back then that was a fluke, but now it’s apparently the standard.

One more thing. Most of us elderly folks didn’t really appreciate the things we had back in school until we got older. Little things, like being spanked by a middle-aged woman holding a wooden paddle. Something you pay good money for later in life. [innocent]

And these kids will be the same ones who expect a paycheck of 50% for not going to work. Earn the grade by doing the work.

Dean

Why should kids even go to school if they are going to get 50% for doing nothing? They could receive their high school diploma and never spend an hour in class.

It's a shame that adults must be taught common sense. Should have been taught that as a child. If I want apple pie for dessert and I never make the pie, I enjoy 0% of that pie for dessert. I don't magically get 50%.

Not sure if this is a double post, first time posting. My understanding is that feeder schools into Tempe's Corona del Sol High School also have this policy of 50% for not doing your work and Corona has to teach them about the Power of Zero. Good for AZ Family to investigate a local connection to this.

My understanding from a discussion with a science teacher at Coronado High School in Tempe is that they have to teach incoming students the "Power of Zero" because the schools feeding into the high school follow a similar policy of awarding 50% for not turning in homework. Be good if AZFamily investigated that.

Liberals are destroying this country starting with children.

Good for her if they didn't turn in the work they deserve ZERO credit.

LSUTGR1

That is called leftist entitlement. NO work = NO credit!
