GRANDMA THANKSGIVING 1

Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench still celebrate Thanksgiving together.

MESA, AZ ( 3TV/CBS 5) - It was the hilarious text exchange that blew up on Twitter.

Wanda Dench texted who she thought was her grandson in 2016 about Thanksgiving dinner at her house. It turns out she texted the wrong number, and the message went to a teenager named Jamal Hinton. But the two connected for Thanksgiving that year because it was so funny.

Fast forward to 2018 and Thanksgiving together has now become a tradition.

“I’m 61,” said Dench.

“I’m 19,” said Hinton.

The unlikely pair connected by that accidental text years ago is now celebrating their third Thanksgiving together.

PKG GRANDMA THANKSGIVING TEXT 2

The unlikely pair connected by that accidental text years ago is now celebrating their third Thanksgiving together.

“No one expected maybe for this to continue on?” asked reporter Briana Whitney.

“That’s probably true, but Jamal is so awesome,” Dench said.

And while Hinton certainly wasn’t the grandson she meant to text in the first place, he’s become one.

“Gaining a new grandma, I thought maybe I’d gain one getting married, but as a friend, it’s great,” said Hinton.

The two said it was never for the publicity, they simply just connect beyond the text, even going to dinner together every few months. Each of their loved ones is now part of one big family.

And if you’re wondering if this will happen again next year, the answer is yes, on one condition.

“Maybe I can invite you if we get our own place,” said Hinton.

“Yes! I would like to retire from doing the dinner and pass it onto the younger generation and I’ll come and visit,” said Dench.

Who would’ve known saying the wrong thing to the wrong person would make Thanksgiving ever year feel just right.
