The battle over changing flight paths at Sky Harbor International Airport has prompted tens of thousands of noise complaints in Phoenix and even a lawsuit.

Now, some people living in south Tempe say they've noticed a lot more noise since the Federal Aviation Administration changed flight paths in and out of Sky Harbor two years ago.

The new flight paths boost efficiency and reduce fuel costs, but officials in both cities say it was all done without public input or thought about noise.

Tempe city officials said they're trying to address the problem. They held a meeting Wednesday night and brought in representatives from the airport but say the issue really rests with the FAA.

They say trying to work with the FAA has been a challenge because the feds don't consider Tempe to be a formal stakeholder in the process.

"Now that they've narrowed those bands, all the flights that used to be diffused over a wide area are now concentrated in a narrow band over a particular part of south Tempe," said Marilyn DeRosa, deputy director of Tempe Public Works.

People in Phoenix have filed at least 65,000 noise complaints since the FAA made these changes. Tempe officials encourage their own residents to do the same, hoping to get the FAA's attention.
