PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Millions of people are planning to take to the sky this Thanksgiving holiday to be with loved ones.
"I hope everyone is able to see their loved ones," Datrevia Harrison said.
It's that time of the year many have been waiting for. "If I weren’t traveling this year, I would be eating alone," Harrison said.
The holiday season usually means gathering around with friends and family. It's something many people weren't able to do last year due to the pandemic.
On Tuesday night, drivers heading to Sky Harbor Airport to pick up friends and loved ones were greeted by bumper-to-bumper traffic.
"I’m really thankful I’m able to travel and see my grandparents. I haven’t seen them in a while," Kaitlyn Taaca said.
Travelers packed into Sky Harbor on what is supposed to be one of the busiest travel days of the year. Foot traffic came in waves on Wednesday afternoon. Many travelers were going to many different places spread across the country.
"I’m traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada," Taaca said.
"I’m traveling to Los Angeles, California," Keith Hall said.
"I'm in Phoenix from San Antonio," one traveler said.
"I’m traveling to Phoenix from Houston," Harrison said.
More than 2.2 million travelers passed through airports yesterday alone and more than 10 million since Friday, marking a milestone as the most people TSA has screened in one day since the start of the pandemic.
HMS Host employees took to the picket line at 5 a.m. Monday. That means food options for Thanksgiving travelers will be limited.
Experts anticipate the overall travel numbers will be within 5% of what they were in 2019. Many travelers said they got to the airport early because they weren't sure what to expect. "Last year, there were much less people on the flights," Harrison said.
"It’s not too busy. Not as much as I expected," Hall said.
"I didn’t think it was too bad," traveler Brooklyn O'Connor said.
Despite some wait times here and there, families hug each other tight and are excited to be back with their loved ones. "It's an opportunity to get to go home and be with family. It's important," traveler David Wood said.
"Last year, I wasn’t able to spend Thanksgiving with anyone but my parents, so this year having other people come too will be special," Hall said.
A good resource to use is the app called MyTSA. You can download it on your phone, and it will show you the latest information regarding your flight.
