SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A Scottsdale couple sparked toy brand Mattel's attention with a social media post asking for a same-sex Barbie wedding set.
Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio are set to be married May 2019 and their two nieces will be flower girls.
When one of the girls' 8th birthday came around, Jacobi and Caprio wanted to get her something special to get her excited about the big day.
The couple found some Barbie wedding sets but none of them were same-sex wedding sets.
They decided to buy two and combine them to create one same-sex set.
The couple was disappointed with the lack of choices and posted their frustration on Instagram, tagging Mattel, the company that makes Barbie.
Hi @Mattel! Happy Holidays. We had a difficult time finding a same sex wedding set to give to my niece for her 8th birthday. she and her little sister are flower girls in our upcoming May wedding. We thought it would be special to give her something with a little meaning behind it. What a bummer you don't make one with two grooms. Anyway, we had to get creative and make a couple purchases. I hope our custom gift inspires you to make a #GayWedding set.
Jacobi said Mattel reached out to him Wednesday to set up a meeting to discuss the issue and they now have a meeting set up in the near future.
In the meantime, Jacobi and Caprio's niece was overjoyed with her birthday gift. The couple said they were happy to give her a gift with a little meaning behind it.
