PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel checked into rehab for alcohol abuse and other health issues nearly two weeks before she went public with the information, according to a statement she released on Tuesday.
The disclosure came shortly after the Arizona Republic first reported that Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone recently discovered Adel was in treatment and gave her a 24-hour deadline to alert the County Board of Supervisors about her absence from office. Penzone suggested that Adel take a leave of absence and issue a limited statement when he confronted her.
Adel said she's not stepping down from her job.
Adel went public with her health issues on Friday and said her decision was made out of concern that rumors of her treatment were swirling and that she didn't want to become a distraction. Adel initially checked into a facility in Arizona before entering another treatment center in California.
