PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - The reality is that a lot of return items end up at Phoenix warehouse where customers can buy them at a big discount.
SaleSumo is a discount store off Van Buren and 48th Avenue in Phoenix, that sells everything from lights and fans, to mailboxes and bath tubs.
Crystal Rosado could be at the mall taking advantage of all the after Christmas sales. Instead, she went to SaleSumo.
"We had never heard of it, but my mother-in-law is like, you should check out this place," said Rosado. "It's pretty hidden, but has a lot of discounts."
But where does all this stuff come from?
SaleSumo President Brian Lesk said that everything you see in their 65,000 square-foot warehouse, some shopper at a big box retailer didn't want.
According to Lesk, the big stores can't always restock return items, so its easier for them to re-sell returns at a big discount.
"The way the system works is - if a product doesn't go back to a retailer, it goes to large warehouses, where companies like us have relationships with retailers and we take that product and sell it to the public," said Lesk.
The day after Christmas is traditionally the biggest return day of the year, which means many of the items brought back to stores Wednesday, will end up at the warehouse, where savvy shoppers can scoop them up at half the price.
Most of the items are brand new, and the rest have minor flaws like a damaged or opened box.
"People don't realize, if they look a little bit, they're gonna save a lot," said Lesk.
