PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- After a two-month training period, Park Central's newest security member is ready to patrol the streets and sidewalks of the mall. Parker stands at 5'2, weighs around 400 pounds, and clocks in at a max speed of 3 miles per hour -- oh, and he's a robot!
Parker is actually a Knightscope K5 autonomous outdoor security robot, to be exact, and runs 24/7 on its own. Parker can also autonomously recharge itself without any help! Parker is one of the few security robots in the Phoenix metro and is part of a commitment to new innovation and technology at Park Central, located near Central Avenue and Thomas Road.
"Parker is a fun addition to Park Central, but with a serious purpose," said Sharon Harper, Chairwoman, and CEO of Plaza Companies, one of the co-developers of Park Central. "We are always looking for ways to innovate at our properties, and that includes making sure they are as safe and secure as possible. Parker will help us achieve that goal by providing a modern, automated resource to augment our security team."
While Parker bears a striking resemblance to a Dalek from the fictional Doctor Who series, Parker's intentions will be used for good! The project's security company, Transcend Security Solutions, will utilize Parker for surveillance and not action. The robot collects data and feeds it through the internet to on-site security, which monitors what the robot sees through various devices and can intervene when needed. Parker began its autonomous patrols around the mall property this week.
