A 22-year-old survivor of the Phoenix serial shooter says bullets came within inches of him and his 4-year-old nephew before he instinctively hit the accelerator to get away.

The man, who asked not to be identified, said he was driving home from the laundromat with his nephew on July 11 around 5:30 p.m., when he stopped at a stop sign at 30th and Sheridan streets. He says the driver of a black BMW pulled alongside him and opened fire on his car.

"My first reaction was to duck, look away, and try to get away as fast as I could from the guy," he said.

Several bullets pierced the victim's two-door car; another ricocheted off a cement wall nearby.

"I believe that the shots should have at least hit me or my nephew," he said.

The man was able to get a look at the suspect and helped provide the second sketch police have been distributing, according to documents released Monday.

Police have linked the murder to the Valley serial killer, who is blamed for nine shootings and seven deaths from mid-March until mid-July.

Just minutes after the interview, reporter Derek Staahl and photojournalist Arnold Espinoza returned to the intersection to record video and saw a black, older-model BMW with damage to the front end.

Staahl called 911, and at least two patrol units responded to search the area. One officer viewed video shot by Espinoza and said the car appeared to match the description of the one police have been looking for.

We sent a picture of the black BMW to the shooting survivor and asked if it was the same car he saw July 11.

"It looks very very very similar," he said via text.
