PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A man accused of shooting and killing his parents and brother at a Phoenix home over the weekend told investigators it started over a fight.
According to court documents, 34-year-old Brandon Lujan was having an argument with his parents, 63-year-old Lewis Lujan and 56-year-old Irene Lujan, at their home near 32nd Street and Thomas Road late Saturday night. Around 11:30 p.m., Phoenix police responded to the area for reports of shots fired, but officers couldn't find any victims or evidence of a shooting.
Sunday afternoon, around 3 p.m., Phoenix police were called to the VA hospital after a patient, later identified as Lujan, told hospital staff he killed his brother and parents. Officers arrived and spoke with Lujan, who told investigators he killed his family at their home -- the same neighborhood officers were at the night before.
Police went to the house and found all three victims had been shot multiple times and were dead. Lujan was arrested at the hospital and taken to police headquarters.
Lujan told detectives during an interview that he and his parents had partially resolved an argument they were having and agreed to talk about things at a later time. But Lujan said his brother, Matthew, 30, got involved and pushed him, causing Brandon to twist his ankle. Lujan claims his brother also punched him twice in the face. Lujan says he pulled a gun from his waistband and shot his brother, and shot him additional times as he tried to get up from the ground.
After hearing the shots fired, Lujan said his father came out of a bedroom and allegedly lunged toward him, which led to Lujan shooting him, according to court documents. Lujan said his mother then came out and tried to lunge at him, so he told police he shot her as well. Police say Lujan didn't call 911 or try to help his family and was aware they all died.
After shooting his brother and parents, Lujan told police he reloaded his gun but had no memory of what he did with his clothes or the gun afterward. Police got a search warrant for the house and found the gun, along with multiple 9mm casings. Lujan was booked into jail for three counts of first-degree murder.
