PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A Phoenix man on the FBI's Terrorist Watchlist was arrested on Wednesday after he threatened Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and Secretary of State Katie Hobbs.
According to court documents, on July 1, 26-year-old Laquint Cherry posted on Twitter under an alias account a statement threatening the lives of Ducey and Hobbs. His message read in part: "Doug Ducey, Katie Hobbs wanna join Jesus in heaven?" Cherry also included hashtags, tagging ISIS and the Islamic State. In the post, Cherry included a photo of himself holding a loaded gun with an extended magazine in his left hand, documents state. The social media company flagged the post, but investigators had to track down the person behind the alias account.
A DPS Criminal Intelligence Analyst used open-source research to find a Facebook page associated with Cherry. Cherry's name matched the name on a bus ticket posted by the same alias account that threatened Ducey and Hobbs. When detectives looked into Cherry's criminal history, the record had a possible terrorist organization member notice. Authorities contacted the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, who confirmed Cherry is on the Terrorist Watchlist for his association with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Police say by Cherry posting his threatening statement and picture on Twitter, he engaged in an act of terrorism by intimidation and implied a threat to kill Arizona public officials. Cherry was arrested at Valleywise Behavioral Health Center Wednesday afternoon.
Court documents state that Cherry told Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies that releasing him from jail was a mistake and that he wanted to kill someone. Cherry has been arrested in the past. When Cherry was 20, he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault in 2014. Cherry was serving two years probation at the time for making false bomb threats to the Jodi Arias trial in May 2013.
Cherry's charges for this arrest include conducting an intentional act of terrorism, computer tampering used to make a threat, and threatening with the intent to harm.
