Phoenix family copes with waist-deep water during monsoon storm

A north Phoenix family doesn’t know where to turn for help after their home was flooded during Thursday night’s monsoon storm.

The home near Dunlap Avenue and 12th Street was filled with a few inches of water. The water outside, though, was waist deep until Maria Garcia and her relatives were able to clear a path for the flood water to pass through a block wall.

"Trying to keep the water out, and us not being able to do anything because the water kept coming in, we just kept hoping the water would stop, that it would stop raining but it didn’t,” Garcia said.

The family was up cleaning at 5 a.m., mopping up mud and hanging out clothes and towels to dry.

Garcia says the worst part is insurance will not cover repairs. Garcia grew up in the home and says her parents have been there for 20 years.

“They work so hard and they pay insurance for a reason,” she said. “And they don’t want to cover anything.”

For now, Garcia has her family members to lean on as they work to make the house look more like their home again.
