PINAL COUNTY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has a new addition to the team: K-9 Rex!

Rex will be assigned to Dep. Phil Gagnier, who recently retired his K-9 partner Toro.

Now, the 20-month-old Dutch Shepherd will be joining the team. Rex, who also has some Malinois and German Shepherd in him, will alert to odors of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.

Rex will also serve as a patrol dog to apprehend suspects and protect handlers.

And don’t worry about Toro. He’s still with Gagnier in retirement as a “very highly-trained house pet.”
