PEORIA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — A man is dead after investigators said he was shot and killed by police officers in Peoria early Sunday morning. It happened near 79th Avenue, just south of Cactus Road, around 3:45 a.m. Officers went to a home because there was a report of a man trying to strangle a victim in a domestic violence situation.
When police got there, a man, later identified as 25-year-old Adrian Begay, approached them in the parking lot. He had a gun and pointed it at his head, detectives said. Officers negotiated with him for several minutes, but he moved the gun from being pointed at his head to pointing it at officers during that conversation. That's when the two officers opened fire, hitting Begay. He died at the scene.
None of the officers were hurt and the Buckeye Police Department is investigating the shooting. This is the 47th officer-involved shooting in the Phoenix so far in 2021 and the 67th in the state overall.
