GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) --Six people were shot and three people are dead in three separate shootings that happened within 24 hours on Glendale avenue, all within blocks of one another.
The latest shooting happened at around 6 p.m. Saturday night. Glendale police officers rushed to a shooting call near 57th and Glendale avenues. Officers focused their investigation around The Astrology Shop.
Tyler Durnell works at the pizza store across the street and said he heard two loud gunshots, then saw people panic. “After that, two or three minutes, I saw somebody smash the front window of the building, and climb inside,” Durnell said. “The guy smashed the window down with like a bag of something. I’m assuming bricks because that’s sturdy glass.”
About 15 minutes later, he said he saw the suspect, who he describes as a white man in his 30s, sprint out of the store and down the street. Glendale police have not released a description of the suspect but said this is “not an active shooter” situation or a robbery. Officers said the 53-year-old man who was shot later died from his injuries. Witnesses describe a gruesome scene in the back of The Astrology Store. “We don’t know exactly who that is yet, and we’re all kind of holding out hope that they’re doing OK,” Durnell said.
The 57th and Glendale avenues incident was the third shooting that happened in the area in a 24-hour span. On Friday night, Glendale police said a 58-year-old man shot his 51-year-old former business partner near 63rd and Glendale avenues, who friends and family identified as Jose Ayala, and his 19-year-old son before turning the gun on himself. Ayala died at the scene, the suspect later died, and the 19-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Around the same time Friday, near 47th and Glendale avenues, officers said two men were shot. Police said they are expected to be OK but have not released a suspect description in that shooting.
