PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – A Phoenix father is facing child abuse charges after allegedly shaking his baby boy so hard it caused a subdural hemorrhage, which, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “is among the deadliest of all head injuries.”

Police arrested Andrew Marc Joseph Pittman, 24, late Monday night.

According to court documents, police received a call in the afternoon about a child not breathing.

“Officers arrived on scene and contacted [Pittman] who reported [giving] his 4-month-old son a bottle and placing him in a crib, then finding him five minutes later not breathing,” reads the probable cause for arrest statement.

The baby was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Doctors there diagnosed the subdural hemorrhage and “complications from the trauma.” They also said there was evidence of an older hemorrhage.

The baby’s prognosis was not immediately available.

"A subdural hematoma is most often the result of a severe head injury," according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. "This type of subdural hematoma is among the deadliest of all head injuries. The bleeding fills the brain area very rapidly, compressing brain tissue."

Shaking can cause this kind of injury in babies because their neck muscles are weak and often unable "to support their heavy heads."

"If a baby is forcefully shaken, his or her fragile brain moves back and forth inside the skull," explains the Mayo Clinic

The results can be devastating.

“Shaken baby syndrome destroys a child's brain cells and prevents his or her brain from getting enough oxygen.” according to the Mayo Clinic. “Shaken baby syndrome is a form of child abuse that can result in permanent brain damage or death.”

Police interviewed Pittman and said “he admitted to shaking his 4-month-old baby son while the child was crying, during the time he was putting the baby down for a nap.”

Police said Pittman also admitted shaking the baby “sometime in December 2018.”

According to his court paperwork, Pittman has no criminal history. Those documents also indicate that he “has access to” a toddler. The relationship there is not clear.

Commissioner Harriet M. Bernick set a secured appearance bond of $50,000. Should Pittman post that, he will be subject to electronic monitoring and supervision by Pretrial Services.

Pittman is scheduled for a status conference on Feb. 19 and a preliminary hearing on Feb. 22.

Andrew is my son... He used to be a manager at GameStop, doesn't do drugs or drink... Never been involved in any gang or crowd that involved criminal activity... Has a 3 year old son with absolutely no problems physically whatsoever... Had recently lost his job... Mom was at work, working 2 jobs. What they don't mention is he was trying to give his boy cpr talking to police over the phone trying to give his son breathe not to stop him from crying... They're trying to give him 2 life sentences and may possibly by locked up for 1-2years before even giving him a trial because family doesn't have $50,000 secure bond to put up for his release... This case is an outrage of injustice that happened over a very tragic late night accident blown way out of proportion... The mother plans on marrying boom in jail to show her support and live and will wait for him... Shew doesn't drink or use drugs either... Anybody with any ability with any resources or ability to help us greatly appreciated even if it is just prayers for him and the reunification of his other boy and his future wife... Makes me wonder how often families that are really good are destroyed by a baby with a febral seizure or other incident that can makeit appear by not looking at all the facts the truth behind an accident... God Help us for our inability to not be condemned before a trial has even stayed or any real facts revealed... Everyone is quick to judge when bad reports are made by media whom should be in control of making sure all facts ate correct before reporting this kind of tragic event... If not before layer when found inaccurate.

and Mom? where is she while baby is being abused - she who is supposed to be watching out for the well being of this beautiful little baby

actually DAD is also supposed to be watching out for the well being of the kid. When you were growing up, did you consider your parents bad if BOTH weren't watching you ALL the time? If not, then why hold the mom to this higher standard. That said, I do hope the law is thrown hard at this guy AND he gets surgically neutered since he has proven he can't handle little ones.
