ELOY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- "I remember clearly, he ordered a No. 4 combo. A Double Western large with a Diet Coke,” said Maria Davis.

It was not what the driver ordered that stood out to Carl's Jr. employee Maria Davis.

It was his passenger.

“Right away I knew it was something fishy. It wasn't normal, when I seen it,” she said.

The man's wife, 74-year-old Linda Puckett was in the passenger seat, positioned upside down, completely naked, and deceased.

“Right away when I seen her feet, she was like colored already like purple, black is what I noticed,” said Davis.

The driver, 70-year-old Rodney Puckett was wearing only his boxers.

“And I kept yelling at my coworker like, 'Come up front, come up front. Hand him the soda so you could see what I’m seeing,’” said Davis.

Employees alerted an Eloy detective already in the restaurant, who pulled Puckett over and arrested him.

“They were coming from Oklahoma. They stopped at a hotel in El Paso, Texas,” said Sgt. Kristie Barnette with the Eloy Police Department. “The morning of May 13 he found her unresponsive and left the hotel room. He placed her body on a luggage cart and left the hotel room.”

Eloy Police say there is security video from the hotel in El Paso.

Barnette says for their small town, this quickly became one of the strangest cases they've ever seen.

“It is definitely bizarre and unique in my opinion. I’ve been in law enforcement for 17 years and I have not come across anything close to the circumstances of this case,” she said.

Linda's body was turned over to the Pinal County Medical Examiner's Office. The Medical Examiner found what appears to be minor blunt force trauma to the body, but the cause of death has still not been determined.

The Eloy Police Department is working with Texas law enforcement to decide whether it was death by homicide. They are still in the early stages of the investigation.

Eloy Police says the woman also had an order of protection against her husband.

“It's sad we weren't able to save her life, but at least the family will have closure. Who knows what he probably would have did with the body,” said Davis.

Puckett was booked into the Pinal County jail for concealing a body, and is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Hey Tom!!!!!
Wonderful Wednesday to you and your family. Just stopping in to say hi. I'm hoping for happy ending, loving, good citizen type stories today, how about you?

How cool to be able to use the carpool lane that whole drive! (And she kept her mouth shut that whole trip which is highly unusual for a woman...kind of a nice trip.)

TRUMP supporter

Would be a great trip.

What people will do just to run the carpool lane!

"Gee, officer don't worry about Linda there, she's just feeling a bit under the weather. She'll be fit as a fiddle in no time."

Build that wall !

Heartbreaking stuff. I’m assuming they will drop charges the minute the coroner’s report is released absolving the husband of any wrongdoing. ...Anything else would be an insult to decency and justice.

Get the guy some help. Sounds like he just lost his entire world.

So he had a REASON for driving around with a dead body. Hmm That whole "had a reason" thing sure sounds familiar. Guess we will all find out eventually.

His dead wife has more intelligence than you. Tool !

Poor old guy. I wonder how he was strong enough to load her into the car after she died in the motel.

Poor old guy? WTF? The woman had an order of protection against her husband. Sounds like another case of domestic violence and possible murder.

This isn't the first time I've heard of elderly people not wanting to let go of a husband or wife who has died so they keep the body with them.

Yes it has happened before. Too bad they arrested the heartbroken gentleman. Hopefully they will release him so he can take his wife home.

My thoughts as well. The guy's probably grieving, taking his wife home for a funeral would likely go a long way in giving him some amount of closure.

She was a dead lay I here.

In 2014, a man named Ray Tomlinson drove his dead girlfriend along with his 93 year-old mother who needed a wheelchair from AZ to Michigan. I can't remember what charges he faced.

nuusmaan: That can't be our Cosmic Ray, can it?!

Agustus Gloop

No, I looked it up many years ago. Mike Archer posted about it, implying it was your "Cosmic Ray." He knew it wasn't, but pretty funny the way he used it against his adversaries.
