PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A man is in the hospital after he was shot by Phoenix police officers following an armed robbery early Friday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said their Street Crimes Unit was made aware of individuals responsible for several armed robberies in the Valley on Jan. 10.

Then this morning, four suspects in an SUV committed an armed robbery at a Whataburger near Dysart Road and Van Buren Street.

"Our officers were following some individuals they believed were in some armed robberies," Thompson said. "They actually had committed an armed robbery in the area of Van Buren and Dysart Road."

The suspects fled prior to apprehension but were picked up shortly after by the Phoenix Police Department's Special Assignments Unit near 91st Avenue and Camelback Road.

After they conducted a traffic stop on the SUV, one of the suspects exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. Thompson said the man did not comply with officers commands and at one point pointed the handgun at the officers.

Two officers then fired their weapons, striking the suspect.

"The suspect came out of that vehicle after they stopped it; he was armed," Thompson said. "He was shot by two of our Special Assignment Unit officers who were involved in that tactical stop."

The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Three other suspects inside the vehicle, a woman, man and juvenile, were taken into custody by police.

Thompson said no officers were injured

Camelback Road is currently closed between 91st and 95th avenues while police investigate the scene.

Due to the proximity of Copper Canyon High School, the entrance to the school will have restrictions for the start of the school day.

Thompson said both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave as part of standard procedure with an officer-involved shooting.

This was the first officer-involved shooting of the year involving the Phoenix Police Department.

This is just more effects of the spread of the 'brown cancer.' Get used to it as it has become the new normal as the cancer continues to spread. You really have to admire the police officers who have to deal with this daily. Thank you officers for working so hard to keep us safe!

Meanwhile, the white cancer is busy molesting children and sexually harassing a massage therapist. Care to comment on those other top stories, ObeyLaws?
Yeah, didn't think so. Those pesky transplants. Smh.

AzNat - I have no idea what point you're trying to make, but I've already commented on those stories. "smh?" How about you stop showing off that fancy GED and try to use real words in the future to convey your thoughts??

It's 2019, guy - get with the times. Of course you don't get the point I'm trying to convey, to use your word. I don't expect folks like you to comprehend any logical thought process.
Did you happen to use the words white cancer in those stories, or does your kind get a free pass? I won't waste my time to check.
