MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A man is in critical condition after he was shot by officers in Mesa early Monday morning.

Police say they received a call around 3 a.m. about a man who was threatening to shoot his father at a home near Gilbert and Broadway roads. Officers arrived on scene and witnessed the man inside a home along with his brother and father.

By 3:15 a.m., the younger brother came out of the home and police say two minutes later, officers spoke with the man over the phone and learned he was holding his father hostage and refused to put down his gun and come outside.

About 30 minutes later, the hostage was able to leave the home and told officers the man had a shotgun and was loading it. Police say the man was seen multiple times in the window and when he pulled out the shotgun, he was shot by officers.

After securing the scene, officers began lifesaving measures and then Mesa fire personnel continued CPR. The man was taken to a hospital where he remains in critical condition. Police say no officers were hurt in the incident.

Broadway Road is closed in both directions from Lindsay to Gilbert Roads while police investigate. The investigation is in its early stages and remains ongoing. No other details will be released at this time.
