SALT RIVER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says a man has drowned in the Salt River.

It happened around 4 p.m. Monday near the Sheep's Crossing Recreation Site, northeast of Mesa in the Tonto National Forest.

The man, later identified as 27-year-old Jose Daniel Castillo-Gonzalez. had reportedly been swimming in the river when he went under the water, and never surfaced. When MCSO deputies arrived at the river, other swimmers were able to help them locate him. Deputies attempted lifesaving measures, but Castillo-Gonzalez did not survive.

MCSO says there are no signs of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the drowning. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for funeral expenses.
