PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A man was pulled from a burning apartment and rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition early Wednesday morning.

The Phoenix Fire Department said the fire broke out just after midnight at an apartment complex near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road. When crews arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first-floor unit. Firefighters made their way into the apartment, found a man inside, and pulled him to safety. The man was treated and taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Fire crews said another man was able to get himself out of the apartment before they arrived. He was evaluated and refused to be taken to the hospital. A woman in her 30s was also injured after jumping from a second-story unit to the ground floor. She was evaluated but also refused transport to the hospital.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and keep it from extending into any of the adjacent units. One person will be displaced at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No firefighters were injured.
