PHOENIX, AZ (3TV/CBS5) -- Christmas came early for hundreds of homeless pets at Maricopa County Animal Shelters this week.

Puppies ‘N Love and Animal Kingdom pet stores, in partnership with Blanco Tacos + Tequila restaurant, teamed up to bring homeless animals and shelter employees treats and food for the holidays.

“At any given time we have more than 800 homeless pets between our east and west Valley shelters plus more than 100 employees. That’s a lot of mouths to feed, so for this year’s employee recognition party we are grateful for so much help feeding the pets and our people,” says Ben Swan with the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC).

Puppies ‘N Love and Animal Kingdom pet stores donated hundreds of gourmet homemade dog treats they make locally and sell in their stores. They also gave the animals hundreds of donated items, such as toys, canned food, beds, leashes, collars, stuffed animals and a whole lot more.

“We have an ongoing donation drive at three of our Valley pet stores where people from the community have been dropping off new and gently used items all month for the pets at MCACC. We think no pet should experience the holidays without receiving something special,” says Linda Nofer, spokesperson for Puppies ‘N Love and Animal Kingdom pet stores.

Two parties this week were organized to deliver the toys and treats, and also provide a meal for shelter employees.

The collection drive will continue until the end of the year. More information about donating can be found online.

But these pets don't just need toys and treats for the holidays... they also need HOMES. The shelters are packed and so many animals are in need of loving new families. Can you adopt? Foster? Volunteer?

If you can't take in a dog or cat at this time, you can still help by "sponsoring" an adoption. Anyone looking to sponsor can do so either by coming in person or calling (602)506-PETS. It would provide a "Christmas miracle" for homeless pets in need.
