PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- It's the time of year for molds and grasses to be popping up and causing you to cough and sneeze. The Sonoran Desert dropped 20 degrees overnight Monday into Tuesday, and with the 20-degree drop came haze, dust, and sniffles.

"I guess the dust and stuff in the air have made me stuffed up and stuff," said Phoenix resident Edward Prince. Prince isn't the only one. People from all across the state say it's happening to them too.

Dr. Sanjay Patel is a local allergist with Desert Center for Allergy and Chest Diseases. He says the PM 10 warning, meaning a lot of dust in the air, mixed with this time of year's common allergens, molds, and grasses, creates this nightmare.

The Sonoran Desert dropped 20 degrees overnight Monday into Tuesday, and with the 20-degree drop came haze, dust, and sniffles.

"With the heavy winds, it tends to stir up the mold spores in the air," said Dr. Patel. "When people see dust, one thing they tend not to realize is the dust they're seeing is a collection of things like mold spores, grass pollens mixed in with dirt. That's what's usually triggering their asthma when they breathe it in."

Dr. Patel also said that pollen can travel over 100 miles. "With that being said, if everything is fine and dandy at Piestewa Peak, that doesn't mean you won't be sneezing. If the air quality is bad over South Mountain, south into the town of Gila Bend, you could still have all of those coughs, itches, and sneezes."

And to help, Dr. Patel says an over-the-counter pill can assist, but he recommends a saline rinse. Of course, if you need to, see an allergist.

"All these things are being breathed in and are causing these conditions," Dr. Patel told Arizona's Family.
