KINGMAN, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- The Kingman Police Department says a man they believe killed a 64-year-old woman also hid her body for months.

According to police, the son of Debra Childers contacted the Mohave County Sheriff's Office on May 12 to report her missing. The son, who lives out of state, told investigators that he had not been able to contact her for several months. KPD says Childers was reportedly living out of her car around Kingman and Golden Valley area.

Officers learned that a man had been taking money out of her bank account over the last few months. During the week of May 24, KPD detectives looked into the money withdrawals as they worked to identify the man. That's when they discovered that he was also driving Childers' car, according to KPD.

Investigators found two storage units that belonged to Childers near Ray and Higley roads. On Friday, May 28, they searched the units and found what they believed to be Childers' body in a large duffle bag. KPD says it looked like her body had been there for several months, according to the press release. The Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed Childers' identity.

Detectives eventually identified the man accessing her bank account and driving her car as 35-year-old Brett Daniel Puett. On Friday evening, deputies and detectives found where Puett was staying and took him into custody.

According to KPD, Puett and Childers met last summer. They apparently were both living out of their cars. Detectives believe Puett shot and killed Childers in November 2020, when they were sharing a motel room. According to the press release, Puett admitted killing Childers, taking her money, and hid her body.

Puett was booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility and is facing charges of second-degree murder, abandonment and concealment of a body, and fraudulent schemes and artifices. KPD says the investigation is ongoing and asks anyone with any information to call them at 928-753-2191.
